Summary:

"The OER Research Hub (OERRH) has been working with both OpenStax College and Siyavula over the past year to examine the impact of open textbooks on educators and students. Siyavula open textbooks are aimed at K-12/school students and ca. 10 million copies of Siyavula textbooks have been distributed across the country by the South African government. Within a year of their launch in early 2012, OpenStax College had gained over 1 million unique learners. By March 2014 OpenStax College textbooks had been adopted by over 500 US colleges. In the USA, where textbook costs can exceed course costs, OpenStax College announced in February 2014 that they had saved students $3.7 million. This webinar will explore the key findings of our collaborative research: Who is using open textbooks? What role do open textbooks play within different contexts and locations? What key challenges do open textbook movements in different locations face?"
