Summary:

"Late last month saw an important publication entitled “The Human Brain Online: An Open Resource for Advancing Brain Research” in PLOS Biology by Ball et al...  The Allen Institute for Brain Science launched in 2003 with a seed contribution from founder and philanthropist Paul G. Allen, the Allen Institute is supported by a diversity of government, foundation and private funds to enable its projects. Given the Institute's achievements, Mr. Allen committed an additional $300 million in 2012 for the first four years of a ten-year plan to further propel and expand the Institute's scientific programs, bringing his total commitment to date to $500 million. Source.  Over the years since 2003, the Institute has launched a number of significant projects such as Brain Explorer, Mouse Brain, Developing Human Brain and Non-Human Primate for example...  If you haven’t yet used Brain Explorer, here is a three minute tutorial video...  Back to Ball et al, “Here we describe an open online resource, the Allen Human Brain Atlas, which puts comprehensive, standardized data from multiple entire human brains into the hands of the global research community, along with tools for mining and making sense of that data. This resource opens new avenues for advancing research programs across disciplines that share an interest in the human brain— from neuroscience research programs based on functional MRI (fMRI) or neuropharmacology, for example, to comparative evolutionary studies and human genetics... Back to Ball et al, 'Here we describe an open online resource, the Allen Human Brain Atlas, which puts comprehensive, standardized data from multiple entire human brains into the hands of the global research community, along with tools for mining and making sense of that data.
