In June, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling released a statement on her website in support of Scotland remaining in the United Kingdom.

She argued: "If we leave... there will be no going back. This separation will not be quick and clean: it will take microsurgery to disentangle three centuries of close interdependence, after which we will have to deal with three bitter neighbours."

She also donated £1 million to the campaign against Scottish independence.
