Summary:

"The University Librarian leads nine libraries on campus, including the Walter Royal Davis Library (the main library on campus and home of the Humanities and Social Sciences collections) the Louis Round Wilson Special Collections Library, and the R.B. House Undergraduate Library. The University Libraries hold 8.2 million volumes and extensive collections of manuscripts and rare books, audio visual materials, microforms, graphics, and government documents. Annual expenditures of the Libraries are approximately $40 million, staff and librarians number 290, along with approximately 300 student employees.

The University Librarian is responsible for leadership and general administration of the University Libraries, including budget management, planning and policy formulation, innovative development of the Libraries' user services, collections programs, scholarly communications, cooperative activities and outreach. S/he oversees facilities and infrastructure, information technology, the Carolina Digital Repository and extensive digital library holdings. The University Librarian serves on the Executive Committee and Governing Board of the Triangle Research Libraries Network, TRLN (Duke University Libraries, North Carolina Central University Library, North Carolina State University Libraries and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Libraries) as well as the University Librarians' Advisory Council for the seventeen campus University of North Carolina System. The University Librarian serves on the Deans' Council and works closely with an elected administrative board representing faculty across the University to provide advice on budget and policy matters. The University Librarian will lead the Libraries' efforts to meet an ambitious development goal of $50 million as part of the University's 7-year $3.5 billion campaign.

The successful candidate will bring to the role significant experience and achievement in leading a research library. Carolina seeks an individual who exhibits strong and inspiring leadership, the ability to articulate a vision and provide strategic direction for its libraries in the rapidly changing information environment, and to provide leadership at the national and regional levels on research library issues. This individual will be committed to building and sustaining a diverse workforce, and will possess effective budget management skills, knowledge of assessment tools and use of data to evaluate programs and services, and a strong understanding of the issues of scholarly communication and open access and the other challenges facing the 21st century research library. An MLS from an ALA-accredited program or other appropriate degree is required; an additional master's degree or PhD is desirable.
