Summary:

"[The] European Space Agency (ESA) has announced its adoption of an Open Access policy for content such as still images, videos and selected sets of data. The ESA is Europe’s gateway to space, and its job is to draw up and carry through the European space programme .

In its efforts to carry out the European space programme, ESA has been sharing vast amounts of information, imagery and data with scientists, industry, media and the public at large via digital platforms such as the web and social media. ESA’s evolving information management policy increases these opportunities. A new Open Access policy for ESA’s information and data will now facilitate the broadest use and re-use of the material for the general public, media, the educational sector, partners and anybody else seeking to utilise and build upon it.

The Open Access policy will not only reinforce the collaboration with the industry, science and Member States, but it is also expected to strengthen the link with the larger public and user communities, contributing to societal benefit. The ESA releases its Open Data, videos and images under a CC BY-SA 3.0 IGO licence. "
