Summary:

"Surprisingly , there are very few truly open access journals within veterinary medicine. Many journals offer the option to publish an article as open access, but this typically involves significant expense on the part of the researcher. PLoS ONE is one of the few significant open access journals that would publish articles from veterinary medicine. It is a multi-disciplinary journal that aims to integrate multiple fields with the stated goal of facilitating integration in disparate areas of science. It is operated by the Public Library of Science as an independent entity with both in-house and international review boards and is widely regarded as one of the largest journals in existence.  It positions itself as a leader within the open access community, promoting and encouraging open access ideals and other concepts such as the creative commons licensing.

The aim of this journal is admirable, though the sheer scope of its size has lended it to some controversy and some articles have been retracted. Nevertheless it is widely well-regarded and many articles published in it have received significant recognition by the scientific community as well as the world community at large"
