Summary:

"The Research Council of Norway is giving universities and university colleges a six-month deadline to upload articles stemming from Council-funded projects to open repositories.

It is a key research policy objective to ensure that the results of publicly funded research are made openly accessible. In 2013 the Research Council made it mandatory for projects funded under Council programmes to make their publications available in open, digital repositories. However, a recent review indicates that too little is being done to comply with this requirement.

A six-month deadline

A review of the Current Research Information System in Norway (CRIStin) database shows that the institutions clearly need a reminder about the Research Council's requirements for open access to publications. Therefore, The Research Council is sending out letters to universities and university colleges to inform of the following:

  • The Research Council asks that all scientific articles registered in the CRIStin database with a Research Council project number are uploaded to an open repository in the course of the next six months.
  • As of 1 October, all project owners affiliated with CRIStin will be required to use the Research Council’s project number for registering publications in the database.

The Research Council will follow up corresponding requirements for archiving and open access in the research institute sector and the health trusts. "
