Summary:
The question of access to knowledge is a fundamental issue. From the Budapest Initiative in 2002 to the Jussieu Appeal in 2017, the road to open access to scientific research has been long and fraught with difficulties. Libraries, hit hard by the explosion in access fees for scientific publications, were among the first to be aware of the danger that the infernal merry-go-round of prohibitive subscription costs and closing strategies of specialized publishers would the freedom of research and the exercise of the documentary function. Library professionals have been able, through their involvement and their expertise, to gain a foothold in the debate and gain recognition as legitimate actors.
