Summary:

[From Google tranlsate] Downloads from the pirated Sci-Hub journal articles website tripled in 2017

The Sci-Hub website allows users to download PDF versions of academic articles, including many paid articles from websites of multinational publishers. Sci-Hub has grown rapidly since its inception in 2011, but the scope of coverage was not clear. It appears that as of March 2017, the Sci-Hub database contains 68.9% of the 81.6 million academic articles registered in Crossref and 85.1% of the articles published in paid journals. Coverage varies by discipline and publisher, but the truth is that Sci-Hub preferably covers the most popular content on academic publishers' websites that are accessed by subscription to a license; to give us an idea of the site's size, Sci-Hub offers greater coverage than the University of Pennsylvania, one of the leading research universities in the United States.
