Summary:

"The Blanchard Community Library in Santa Paula will host a free four-part introduction to open data and its use in a cumulative series of workshops on Saturday afternoons this May. The library at 119 N. Eighth St. is offering these courses as part of an open data initiative sponsored by the California State Library and the Knight Foundation.

Open data is freely available, modifiable data that can be shared for any purpose. According to the library, it has the power to improve the government by increasing transparency, empower citizens by enabling more informed decision making, create new business and career opportunities; and solve big public problems through access to new forms of data-driven assessment.

All workshops will meet from noon to 1 p.m. Here’s the schedule:

  • “Defining and Identifying Open Data,” May 5.
  • “Locating and Using Open Data,” May 12.
  • “Telling a Story With Open Data,” May 19.
  • “Answering Real-World Questions,” May 26.

As each class builds on the previous one, attending all four is recommended. The library will have a limited number of computers available for use during the workshops, and participants are encouraged to bring their own laptop.

Registration is required at http://blanchardlibrary.org/opendata.

For more information, contact Adult Services Librarian Justin Formanek at 805-525-3615 or justin.formanek@blanchardlibrary.org."
