Ferwerda, E., F. Pinter, et al. (2017). [e-Book] A Landscape Study on Open Access and Monographs: Policies, Funding and Publishing in Eight European Countries. Couperin, Knowledge Exchang, 2017.

The Knowledge Exchange is continuously active in the promotion of Open Access, bringing together experts in Open Access from the six partner countries of the European Union

The study was initiated and financed by Knowledge Exchange CRIStin and Couperin, written by Eelco Ferwerda, Frances Pinter and Niels Stern, a landscape study about the conditions and potential of open access books. The report is based, among other things, on 73 in-depth conversations, carried out in eight different countries (Denmark, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, France, Norway and Austria) to understand the current evolution between three groups of Stakeholders: publishers, funders and libraries.

The importance of the authors' attitudes, academic rewards and incentive systems is also raised throughout the study by numerous interviewees. The study shows that although the main policies of organic farming do not include monographs, discussions on organic farming and monographs are emerging and are expected to accelerate in the coming years. The general explanation that monographs are not included in the policies is the global approach in the publication of journals and the perception that dealing with monographs is more complex than with journals. Some also point to the lack of demand from the authors. In general, the OA book publishers will comply with the gold OA policies of the funders and institutions. This is not the case with green OA. Apparently, the current self-archiving policies of book publishers are largely limited to book chapters. The report also points to the fact that book funding regimes lag behind article regimes and that their availability to fund the publication process is somewhat ad hoc in all the countries we have studied. However, the authors are "cautiously optimistic" about the prospects of organic farming and monographs. The report creates an overview of the policies of organic farming monographs, funding streams and publication models for the eight countries for the first time...."
