Open science

Open science is the idea that science works best when it is conducted and reported transparently. The more information we have about a scientific study, the more confidence we can have in its results. Open science also means that scientific data and methods can be repurposed to answer other questions and address real world problems. Many of the challenges facing science today stem from a lack of openness. Across a wide range of scientific disciplines, important findings cannot be replicated by other scientists. And studies that don’t find the desired effect often remain unpublished. As a result, a huge amount of time and money is wasted on research that is effectively redundant.

The Frankl solution

Frankl exists to address these problems by facilitating and incentivising open science. Frankl applications help scientists collect, store, and share their data using blockchain and other technologies. It’s open science ‘by design’. The Frankl token enables access to Frankl applications and rewards scientists for sharing their data and their data collection protocols. The Frankl model is applicable to many areas of science. But we’re starting with our own area of expertise — cognitive science. Frankl for cognitive science The Frankl team are building app-based assessments of cognitive abilities such as language, memory, and reading. Our initial projects focus on cognitive assessment in autism and dementia. These applications represent a significant advance on current practices, which still often involve paper and pencil tests and may underestimate the true abilities of individuals with conditions such as autism. Frankl apps and blockchain integration will allow secure data management, facilitating data sharing for collaborative research and clinical practice whilst maintaining the privacy of individuals. Software developed by the Frankl team will be released open source. We will work with other researchers to put their tests on the Frankl platform, enabling them to receive micro-payments in Frankl tokens when their tests are re-used. Together these apps will disrupt the projected US$8 billion market for cognitive assessment and kickstart the Frankl Open Science ecosystem.
