Summary:

Google English: "GRECO project: citizen science for the development of photovoltaic energy

The Center for Science, Communication and Society Studies of the Pompeu Fabra University (CCS-UPF) participates along with 10 other international partners in the European project GRECO, which puts into practice the concepts of responsible research and innovation and "open science" for the development of socially responsible photovoltaic products.

The European GRECO project ("Fostering a Next Generation of European Photovoltaic Society through Open Science") applies the concept of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) to the field of photovoltaic energy to guide innovation towards the current challenges of the society. The RRI defends that a research or innovation, to be responsible, has to take into account the needs, expectations and values of the society in which it develops. The project, which is an initiative of the Horizon 2020 program of the European Commission, has a budget of 3 million euros for its three years.

The Solar Energy Institute of the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) coordinates this multidisciplinary research project in which, in addition to the researchers, other agents such as the administration and the industry, professionals from different guilds and the citizens themselves will participate in a jointly to develop six innovative products related to photovoltaic energy.

In addition, through the "open science" tools, the data and results will be shared to the maximum (in line with the so-called Open Access or open access) to generate a more accessible research process for the rest of the world. "This will undoubtedly allow the developed scientific concepts to be quickly reused by third parties, science can move forward in a more transversal way and there is no double financing of the same research in different parts of the world", comment Ana Belén Cristóbal and Carlos del Cañizo, coordinators of this project.

The CCS-UPF will participate in the project due to its long and proven experience in citizen participation, scientific communication and RRI. Among other actions, he leads the RRI training at the internal level of the GRECO project, as well as the elaboration of an open and responsible science model exemplified in photovoltaic energy.

An international association to obtain the greatest impact

The research consortium, coordinated by the Polytechnic University of Madrid, will have the participation of Pompeu Fabra University, the University of Évora (Portugal), the Central Solar Energy Laboratory (Bulgaria), the Helmholtz Institute of Berlin (Germany), the Reiner Lemoine Institute (Germany) and the University of São Paulo (Brazil). Likewise, the Junta de Andalucía, the Swiss company Insolight and the Euro-Mediterranean Association of Irrigators are partners of the Consortium.
