Summary:

In November 2018, the federal and state governments decided to set up a National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI). In the NFDI, databases are to be systematically indexed, secured in the long term and made accessible across disciplines and national borders in accordance with the FAIR principles. The NFDI is set up in a science-driven process as a networked structure of self-initiated consortia. With this third call, the German Research Foundation (DFG) invites you to submit applications for funding for further NFDI consortia.

Consortia are alliances of users and providers of research data aimed at long-term cooperation and include universities, non-university research institutions, departmental research institutions, academies and other publicly funded information infrastructure institutions. They are organized according to specialist groups or methods and have the aim of ensuring access to and management of the research data relevant to them and making them sustainable.

The NFDI will be fully effective when it can grow as a networked structure. Basic services, with which the basic infrastructural supply is guaranteed for potentially all consortia and interoperability is permanently secured, contribute to the success of the networking. Basic services are therefore constitutive for the success of the NFDI. Because they are a common concern of all consortia, their development or quality-assured implementation must primarily come from the specialist consortia themselves.

If a basic service cannot be covered by the specialist consortia themselves, actors or institutions that have not yet participated in a consortium - ideally within the framework of strategic partnerships with specialist consortia or consortia initiatives - can take responsibility for these basic services and apply for funds . For the preparation of such applications, it is expected that they are closely geared to the needs of the specialist consortia and that this is appropriately documented in the application. There is also close feedback from the directorate of the National Research Data Infrastructure Association (NFDI) e. V. expected. Please consider the announcements on the website of the NFDI-Verein (see link below). The result of these feedback processes must be documented in the application.
