Summary:

Thiel, Jessica (2022) Open publishing and the value of access. PhD thesis, Queensland University of Technology.

Abstract: There are fundamental problems with the educational publishing market; textbooks and other education resources cost a significant amount of money to access and are governed by restrictions which limit how they can be accessed, used, and reused. This thesis investigates open publishing in higher education and offers an alternative to how educational materials (particularly textbooks), can sustainably be produced and managed. The research further considers how the broader adoption of open publishing in higher education could positively influence the way publishing in education considers systemic issues such as equity, diversity, and inclusion, and ultimately, provide opportunities to support human development.
