" ... I write about open access because our approach to communicating research results within the scientific community is faltering, like a spinning top that has lost its mojo; we have serious problems with peer review, impact factors, retraction rates, and the use of bibliometrics as a foundation for policy.  I also believe that universities are frequently out of kilter in their practice of leadership; we rarely appreciate how good leadership can offer improved conditions for education and research. And when we think about those who are building careers at universities, the notion of balance pops up again. Early-career academics meet a skewed system in which many face a seemingly unending string of short-term, unpredictable contracts. When a permanent job finally is landed, the expectations are often so unrealistic that it challenges a healthy implementation of what has come to be labeled work-life balance ..."
