Ask Oxford & Cambridge University Press drop the lawsuit

Summary:

"Oxford University Press & Cambridge University Press have filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Rameshwari Photocopy Service and Delhi University. Their crime? Selling photocopied course packs at a fraction of the original cost for students who can’t afford the publications. If Delhi University loses, the precedent will impact students across India, making course material unaffordable across the nation. Ask Oxford and Cambridge University Press to drop the lawsuit. Oxford and Cambridge Universities are prestigious institutions globally renowned for their values of 'advancing learning, knowledge and research worldwide.' Their prestige is built up on a powerful global brand that they can’t afford to tarnish. But this lawsuit has already started to damage their reputation. Last year over 300 academics from the UK, USA, Europe and beyond – including Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen – spoke out in an open letter that received much media and academic attention ... The statement was signed by 33 of the very authors the University Press are claiming to represent – shattering any claims of the lawsuit’s legitimacy. A well-timed campaign has the power to convince them that it’s not worth it, and save affordable education for millions of students.  Education is one of the greatest enablers for people from less privileged backgrounds and reproduction of academic material is a right protected under Section 52 of the Indian Copyright Act1.  Next week students from Delhi University will defend this right in court. If they are backed by 20,000 people across India, Oxford and Cambridge University Press will no longer be able to take this case lightly.   Please ask them to prioritise learning above royalties and drop the lawsuit."
