Open Access Journals: Do you know how your adviser is submitting your papers? | Official GRAD 5104 Blog

Summary:

"I was surprised to find out that most of the biomechanics Journals i submit to are Hybrid Open Access Journals, meaning there is an option to publish as open access. These include journals such as the Journal of Biomechanics and Gait and Posture.  Even more surprising to me is that i do not know if my papers were submitted to these journals as open access or not. I never discussed this with my adviser who is typically the person who submits the final versions. With the current shift towards open access journals and the controversy surrounding them i think it is important to discuss with your adviser how you would like your papers submitted. I am not blaming my adviser for not discussing the options with me ( in fact it is partially my ignorance that that has left me blind to this) but i do think it should be partly the responsibility of a mentor to inform, especially early on in the students career.  I am curious how many graduate students  are in the dark about how their papers are submitted to hybrid open access journals."
