    <title>Free UKSG webinar - Better together: building services for public good on top of content from the global network of open repositories | UKSG</title>
    <summary type="html">&lt;p&gt;"CORE hosts the world’s largest collection of open access full texts, offering seamless, unrestricted access to research for citizens, researchers, libraries, software developers, funders and others. CORE’s aggregated content comes from thousands of institutional and subject repositories as well as journals and covers all research disciplines. In January 2019, CORE has hit the mark of 10 million monthly active users (10.41 million users). In September 2019, core.ac.uk has made it to the top 5k websites globally by user engagement as measured by the independent Alexa Rank, making it clearly one of the world’s most widely used Open Access services.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In this talk, Petr and Nancy will explain the role of CORE in the open science ecosystem. They will introduce the solutions CORE offers for improving the delivery of research literature, including tools for discovering freely available copies of papers that might be behind publishers’ paywalls as well as a recommender system for open access literature. The use of CORE data to monitor compliance with open access policies has also recently received attention. The presenters will then reflect on the challenges in the sector and share their experience of building value-added services for the society on top of open content offered by libraries and their affiliated institutional repositories and open access journals...."&lt;/p&gt;

    <summary type="html">&lt;p&gt;Why are comics and other literature centered on LGBTQ+ characters targeted so frequently by censors? What can we do to ensure these important books stay on shelves? Join CBLDF and a panel of creators, educators, librarians, and retailers to discuss the challenges facing LGBTQ comics on [DATE and TIME]. Cartoonist Paige Braddock, the Eisner-nominated creator of Jane’s World; historian, educator, and creator Justin Hall, the editor of award-winning anthology No Straight Lines: Four Decades of Queer Comics; librarian and activist Valerie Acklin, a member of the American Library Association’s Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Round Table (GLBTRT); and retailer Katie Proctor, the owner of Portland, Oregon’s inclusive comic book store, Books With Pictures, will talk about the history of censorship of LGBTQ+ comics, why LGBTQ+ comics are an important part of any library or classroom collection, and what we can do to defend LGBTQ+ content from censors. Take PRIDE in Comics is the latest in CBLDF’s new educational webinar program. Using a school district partnership, formation of a Latina/o community group, and development of library programming as case studies, the speaker will present strategies to connect your Latina/o communities.     <title>Not an Open Book: The Outsourcing of Oregon’s Community College Bookstores – openoregon.org</title>
    <summary type="html">&lt;p&gt;Clackamas Community College recently signed a contract to outsource their campus store to Barnes &amp;amp; Noble Education, and Lane Community College’s Board of Education approved the outsourcing of its bookstore despite community objections. Meggie Wright, OER Librarian, Lane Community College, and Colleen Sanders, Reference Librarian, Clackamas Community College, will share their experience with outsourcing negotiations at their colleges. This webinar will offer firsthand insight into some of the problems uncovered by outsourcing, including the incompatibility of the missions of community colleges and for-profit companies; the unsustainability of operating a core student service on a self-support revenue model; and the potential for “openwashing” products that may present academic freedom, accessibility, and student data privacy issues.&lt;/p&gt;

    <title>KidCitizen: See, Think, and Wonder with Primary Sources | National Council for the Social Studies</title>
    <summary type="html">&lt;p&gt;This presentation highlights a freely available digital game designed to foster young children's engaging inquiry with primary sources. KidCitizen is part of the Congress, Civic Participation, and Primary Sources Project. It is funded by a grant from the Library of Congress. The presenters will introduce KidCitizen and discuss how the models of learning showcased in the KidCitizen templates may be leveraged by teachers to support disciplined inquiry in primary grade instruction. Participants will discuss strategies for engaging their students in the games, and take part in a mini-lesson based on the accompanying Teacher's Guides to experience implementation that supports and scaffolds historical inquiry and disciplinary specific process skills for their students while using the digital interactive. The focus of the digital game is to facilitate a developmentally appropriate process of careful looking, historical thinking, and evidence-informed analysis that are at the center of disciplinary literacy.&lt;/p&gt;

The term “eBook” calls to mind an alphabet soup of delivery formats (EPUB, MOBI, AZW, IBA, PDF, and more). Purchasing as we have traditionally known it is replaced by a wide array of “leasing” models where a dropped contract can result in collection depletion. Managing a digital collection requires attention to detail. The screen reading vs. print reading debate rages on.&lt;/p&gt;

Creating streets where the curbs are removed in favor of low-speed and vibrant shared spaces creates challenges for users who have vision impairment, both in terms of identifying conflicts with other users and navigating a corridor with minimally defined edges. This webinar will explore the latest guidance in addressing the needs of persons with no or low vision in shared streets and plazas.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

In the recent webinar, Supercharge Your Storytime Assessment: Using Data to Tell Your Story, presenters and participants acknowledged the challenges around assessment while offering ideas on how data gathering can be useful. It can help us prove our value, use resources more efficiently, deliver quality programs, communicate with funders, and show growth. Moving from head counts at storytimes to outcome measurement empowers us to measure the good we do and our value to patrons.&lt;/p&gt;
