<p>2016 is the year when piracy finally became an unavoidable topic in the domain of scholarly communications. This article gives insight into the Guerilla Open Access (GOA) movement, which is responsible for the creation and maintenance of massive, copyright infringing, freely accessible online shadow libraries of scholarly works: journal articles, monographs, textbooks. It reconstructs the developments in the western and global academia and scholarly publishing which led to the birth of the movement, and identifies some of the factors its ongoing existence depends on. <p>On 5th December 2012, a scientific article reviewing a change in the feeding behaviour of the European catfish, one of the largest freshwater fish, was published in the American scientific journal, PLOS ONE, an open access journal, which also allows the mass publication of pictures and videos. Within a few days following the publication of this article, it was relayed by numerous web sites and generated a media craze. In this paper, we analyse the circulation of this scientific information in the sphere of Web-based media during the two months following its publication, by revealing the citation mechanisms of the original article and the logic of the Internet users participating in its diffusion.</p>

<p>As I prepared to travel to Manchester earlier this week for the 2016 European Science Open Forum (ESOF), I had an unwanted extra item on my to-do list: working out, in detail, whether it was physically possible for me to attend. My problem was my foot: a few weeks ago, I broke it, and as ESOF approached, it became clear that my injury wouldn’t heal in time. I was wary of trying to do a conference on crutches, but the reassuring responses to my queries (yes, my hotel had accessible rooms; yes, the venue for the conference, Manchester Central, was “very accessible”) convinced me that it would be okay. So I headed off to Manchester last Sunday for two days of science talks – and got an eye-opening lesson on what it’s like to attend a scientific conference with a physical disability.</p>

<p>A lot of academics can ignore barriers caused by funding because it’s a library problem that doesn’t affect them. Inconvenience, however, does. They want their stuff easily shared, though that desire doesn’t always include willingness to do the extra work to make a toll-gated article available online; the fact that a full quarter of faculty at the University of California system have done this extra work suggests things may be changing, though only with a lot of advocacy. As the Library Loon explains, institutional repositories aren’t the magical answer to paywalls, but 25 percent participation among a very large number of scholars ain’t bad. Still, scholars like to refer people to texts, and as more and more can be shared quickly with a link, irritation will grow with those that aren’t similarly shareable.</p>

<p>During the past 2,5 years Open Knowledge has been a partner in PASTEUR4OA, a project focused on aligning open access policies for European Union research. As part of the work, a series of advocacy resources was produced that can be used by stakeholders to promote the development and reinforcement of such open access policies. <p>Driven by a digitization of society, the academic publishing industry has undergone major changes in the past two decades, with online articles replacing paper-printed articles as the main example. Furthermore, in November 2013 the Dutch government formulated the aim to reach a system of full open access to publications (OAP) by 2024 and in May 2016 the Competitiveness Council of the EU took important decisions to achieve immediate OAP by 2020. Clearly, a transition towards OAP has been initiated, reflected by the establishment of a remarkable number of open access (OA)-journals. Nevertheless, publishers of OA-journals face major challenges. To overcome these challenges and establish a successful introduction to the market, the innovation of OAP has to fulfil customer’s needs and be superior to alternatives. Therefore, an understanding of potential customers and the factors influencing their decision to adopt the innovation, is important. This research focuses on the scientist as the customer of OAP, because a scientist decides where to submit his/her paper and therefore whether or not to publish in OA. </p>

<p>Springer and the Swedish library consortium for universities and research institutes (Bibsam) have finalized a broad agreement for Springer Compact running through December 2018. Springer Compact is a transitional deal combining reading access and open access publishing in one payment scheme. Specifically, participating consortium members’ researchers gain access to over 2,000 Springer journals and also the right to publish their research via the open access model in more than 1,650 Springer hybrid journals. <p>Open access, open data, open source, and other open scholarship practices are growing in popularity and necessity. However, widespread adoption of these practices has not yet been achieved. One reason is that researchers are uncertain about how sharing their work will affect their careers. We review literature demonstrating that open research is associated with increases in citations, media attention, potential collaborators, job opportunities, and funding opportunities. These findings are evidence that open research practices bring significant benefits to researchers relative to more traditional closed practices.</p>

<p>Today, we are celebrating President Barack Obama signing much-needed reforms to the Freedom of Information Act into law, just in time for the 50th birthday of the nation's landmark open government law on July Fourth. As we've written before, the FOIA Improvement Act of 2016 is the result of years of work by advocates in Washington. It is neither as strong nor as flawed a bill as it might have been, but codifying a “presumption of openness" for disclosing government records to the public is unquestionably a step forward for the United States. It's also a rare, welcome example of bicameral bipartisanship in a Congress notable for polarization, as well as an important victory for transparency in a city that needs it.</p>

<p>One day after Amazon announced that it would introduce Amazon Inspire, a free instructional resources site where teachers could share lesson plans, the company said it had removed three items from the site after educators complained that the products were copyrighted materials. In a related blunder, Amazon had included two of the items it has since taken down in a screen shot of the site that was sent to journalists and published in news outlets, including The New York Times. More embarrassing still: Two items — a collection of first-grade math lessons and English literature activity lessons — in the Amazon screen shot were created by authors on teacherspayteachers.com, a rival instructional resources site where educators offer lesson plans they have created.</p>
