Summary:

"On February 18, 2025, Utrecht University and Leiden University will organize a free symposium on publishing and copyright, titled Authors and Rights in Publishing: Perspectives on Contracts, Licenses, Rights Retention, AI, and TDM, held at the Utrecht University Library (Science Park)

The event will cover the legal and practical aspects of scholarly communication—encompassing contracts, copyright, licenses, rights retention, text and data mining (TDM), and related areas. These topics are often perceived as inaccessible and laden with jargon, hindering collective discussions and coordinated actions. Despite the fact that all Dutch universities are well-resourced with experts working in specialized areas, there is significant potential for progress through the sharing of our respective expertise. By pooling our knowledge and collaborating more effectively, we aim to demystify persisting legal complexities and equip research support professionals to enhance research more effectively, improve policies, and strongly advocate the rights and needs of researchers and institutions alike. In doing so, we also intend to work towards creating and sharing practical resources on these topics.

Topics range from author agreements, licenses, rights retention, TDM, AI and copyright in scholarly communication, zooming into the practicalities while also taking a bird’s eye view on the issues. While it is targeted toward librarians and support staff in Dutch research universities, we also welcome individuals and organisations with an interest in these topics...."
