Wellcome Trust extends its OA mandate from articles to books

Summary:

"From today's announcement: 'The Wellcome Trust today announces that it is to extend its open access policy to include all scholarly monographs and book chapters written by its grantholders as part of their Trust-funded research....' Kudos to Wellcome. Some other research funders have encouraged book authors to make their books OA, favored applicants who promised to make their books OA, or provided funds to help pay for OA editions. But I believe this is the first funder policy to mandate OA for scholarly monographs arising from funded research. If so, then it's another point on which Wellcome is an OA pioneer....Some OA advocates have wanted to limit OA policies to journal articles, because articles generate no royalties for authors. But I've defended the idea of funder OA mandates for books...."
