Repositório Aberto: O REPOSITÓRIOAbERTO : recuperar, preservar e difundir o conhecimento "em qualquer lugar do mundo" (2009)

In Portuguese with this English-language abstract: This dissertation aims at presenting the institutional archive of Universidade Aberta, to explain how it was created, developed and structured, as well as how and where it fits in the university profile. Since its contents are open to the public, it was decided to carry on further studies concerning these institutional archives and to observe how their development and increasing importance are a result of offering scientific literature in an open access mode. When comparing this archive with the archives developed by the other partners involved in RCAAP – Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Portuguese Open Access Scientific Archive), within which it was created and implemented, the audiovisual documents are its most specific feature. Therefore, it is fundamental to know, understand and be able to apply to these files, the tools developed by digital libraries and that ensure the preservation of such documents. Since DSpace is the platform used to store them, an analysis of its characteristics and functionalities was undertaken. Accordingly, the ―MPEG-7‖ norm was analysed, because it provides the parameters needed to create the metadata to be used with audiovisual contents. The current maintenance proposals appropriate to protect documents were also analysed. Universidade Aberta is engaged in providing and satisfying the users’ needs, independently of their bond to the academic and research world, by offering specific services able to answer them. Due to its technical features as well as to the specificity of its current and future contents, REPOSITÓRIOAbERTO can become a major tool to be used by Universidade Aberta in the pursuit of its objectives and mission.
