"DOIs are an excellent way to organize your scholarly content because they generate and track usage, and attribution, and facilitate the online exchange of scholarly content. The publisher registers the DOI with services like Crossref or Datacite, which means that with the persistent identifiers (PIDs), all service providers and aggregators will be able to track citations, online mentions, and usage and redirect users to the publisher’s electronic version....

Increasingly, book authors, especially authors of open-access works, are looking for the same kind of usage and impact metrics that they have come to expect for their journal articles. They would like to see citations, geographical location of usage, and mentions on Twitter, Facebook, or in newspapers and blogs. All of these kinds of metrics are largely dependent on authors and systems using DOIs to ensure the best possible attribution. Without a DOI, many citations will not be able to be resolved...."
