"[In Mendeley] academics, struggling with hundreds of research papers, can drag and drop them as PDF files into an online database, which will work out the title and author. It then extracts all the information about who uses which paper, and “crowdsources” it to reveal trends. “It’s like Amazon,” says Dr Henning, “People who have read this paper have also read that paper.” He calls it “collaborative filtering”.
