"One year ago Friday, a group of 10 Montreal lawyers and information technologists behind the creation of what is today called the largest free database of case law in the world began life as the owners of a private company. Montreal-based Lexum Inc. is a spinoff of a laboratory at the Université de Montréal hatched in 1993 as the result of collaboration with the Supreme Court of Canada, which was seeking to publish its decisions online. That collaboration blossomed into CanLII, a service owned by the Federation of Law Societies of Canada, which offers free, online access to the laws and regulations of all jurisdictions across Canada as well as more than 800,000 decisions of the Canadian courts....Just a few weeks ago, Lexum launched Oyez, Oyez, an interactive software tool designed to help municipalities post public materials such as bylaws and regulations online that are searchable..."
