Summary:

"What Ms. [Phoebe] Hearst failed to anticipate [in the 1890's], though, was that nearly all those objects [in the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology at Berkeley] would for more than half a century be largely inaccessible to all but a handful of scholars....[This is the situation] Mari Lyn Salvador inherited when she took over as the museum’s director in December. Ms. Salvador has embarked on an ambitious effort to centralize the museum and bring it to the public. If she succeeds, the Bay Area could eventually be host to a world-class anthropology museum that boasts...open access....“Phoebe Hearst believed in public education, research and learning, not just in acquiring objects,” Ms. Salvador said. “The museum should become an open source.” ..."
