In July, the guests discussed at the event 'The ABC of free knowledge' of our media partner Wikimedia eV exactly these questions. For this purpose, the Berlin Culture Secretary Tim Renner met with urban researcher Dr. Paula Hildebrandt and Prof. Dr. Johannes Vogel, general manager of Berlin's Natural History Museum .. Prof. Dr. Johannes Vogel from Berlin's Natural History Museum believes that at European level a clear trend towards greater openness in the scientific and cultural field. Europe try more than ever to present itself as open to ideas especially in open science. They concern not only to the question of how cultural institutions can put their content into the net, but about the overall institutional landscape transform construction trate. This process is very complicated very political and especially incredibly expensive.  But what can cultural institutions now actually do in order to ensure the widest possible participation of their cultural heritage? It was important first of all that institutions digitize their cultural treasures at all and make the largest possible number of people available, since the panel agreed. The Natural History Museum is here in Berlin's cultural landscape as a pioneer, the establishment has already digitized much of its remarkable collection and it acquired its own digitization street about last year.  Tim Renner, since last year the Berlin State Secretary for Culture, stressed that many institutions just not ready were like the Natural History Museum. Digital copies would still too often seen as a back-up copies of their own stocks. Accordingly, was still far not arrived anywhere, that it has to go the next step is to release digitized content under a free license and thus make a living re-use. But even this is just no guarantee of wide participation to the content ..."
