"Open access is not just for science and medicine. It is true that in the humanities and social sciences there is less ‘money in the system’ of scholarly publishing, but they are catching up in terms of new and creative open access initiatives. During the international open access week, our local event on 22 October will be a symposium on open access publishing in the humanities and social sciences, with the motto Research without paywalls. Keynote speaker will be Martin Paul Eve (Birkbeck, University of London), introduced here by RUG professor Marcel Broersma as “one of the most stimulating thinkers about open access in the humanities. With a disciplinary background in English literature, Eve has in the past years been actively advocating free availability of research on the internet. He is a founder and co-director of the Open Library of Humanities which, with support of various libraries and foundations world-wide, provides free access to journals, books and other public-cations. Eve believes that research should leave its 'ivory tower' and should be available to broader public, Broersma states. In his public lecture Martin Paul Eve will without doubt offer thought-provoking perspectives which will provoke debate about the best way to organize academic publishing in the future ..."
