Muslim-American Terrorism: Declining Further

According to a new report released by the Triangle Center on Terrorism and Homeland Security, the number of homegrown terrorist incidents by Muslim-Americans has dropped for the third straight year. The report, Muslim-American Terrorism: Declining Further, "is the fourth annual report on Muslim-American terrorism suspects and perpetrators" published by the Center, and highlights "educational and occupational information, as well as a comparison with Islamic terrorism in Western Europe."

The report contains various findings and data, including:

• For the second year in a row, there were no fatalities from Muslim-American terrorism
• Since 9/11, Muslim-American terrorism has claimed 33 lives in the U.S., while more than 200 Americans have been killed in the same time period in political violence by white supremacists and other far right groups
• Only one of the nine Muslim-American terrorism plots in 2012 led to violence
• None of the 2012 suspects had been to terrorist training camps overseas
• Only 6% of the suspects had been diagnosed with mental illness prior to their arrest or attack
• The number of Muslim-Americans indicted for supporting terrorism fell from 27 individuals in 2010 to 6 in 2012
• The number of Muslim terrorism suspects and perpetrators has also been declining in Europe

The report's author, Charles Kurzman, stated, "'Miniscule numbers of Muslim-Americans have engaged in terrorist activity over the past decade. It is reassuring to see that the wave of violence so many peopled feared has not come to pass'".
