2019 California Water Law Symposium Set for February 2nd in San Francisco
Legal Planet: Environmental Law and Policy 2019-01-11
The 15th Annual California Water Law Symposium will convene on Saturday, February 2, 2019. This year’s Symposium venue is the UC Hastings College of the Law in downtown San Francisco. The theme of next month’s Symposium is California groundwater, with a focus on implementation of the state’s landmark 2014 legislation, the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (“SGMA”).
The Water Law Symposium is a truly unique event: it is entirely organized and hosted by an extraordinary collaboration of law students from six different Northern California law schools: UC Hastings, UC Davis, UC Berkeley, the University of San Francisco, Golden Gate University, Stanford University and the McGeorge School of Law.
In its relatively short history, the Water Law Symposium has established itself as California’s preeminent water law conference. Several years ago, the American Bar Association recognized the annual Symposium as the premier student-organized legal event in the nation.
Attendance to next month’s Symposium is free for students, $60 for practitioners, and $45 for non-profit and government attorneys. The Symposium also offers up to 7 MCLE credits for attorneys for an additional charge of $15. Registration for the event includes a hosted breakfast, lunch and networking reception. To register, please visit: https://www.waterlawsymposium.org/registration.html.
This year’s Symposium panel topics will focus on groundwater sustainability agency structures under SGMA; groundwater adjudications; new developments in tribal water rights; groundwater contamination; interconnected surface water and groundwater-related issues; and the challenges of providing safe and affordable drinking water to all Californians. Keynote speakers include former State Senator Fran Pavley and State Water Resources Control Board Chair Felicia Marcus, in a conversation moderated by yours truly. The full Symposium agenda can be found here: https://www.waterlawsymposium.org/agenda.html.
The student organizers of the 2019 Water Law Symposium are seeking sponsorships from law firms and other organizations. Contributions can be made, and related questions answered, by contacting this year’s Symposium Co-Chairs, Hastings law students Lauren Marshall and Olivia Molodanof, by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Hope to see you in San Francisco on February 2nd for this year’s Water Law Symposium!
