"[T]he EUA (European University Association) recently published the results of a year’s deliberations by a specially-established Working Party on OA: this came up with a set of recommendations to EUA members, and the EUA secretariat was keen to work with us to help those recommendations get taken up in member universities....[W]e decided to make [EurOpenScholarship] open to universities worldwide. This necessitated dropping the ‘Euro’ bit of the name, but we liked the acronym EOS because it is the Greek word for dawn. We therefore settled for ‘enabling’ as a word that both retained the ‘e’ and admirably fitted the aims of the organisation...."
