CARES Action: Homecoming parades
Poweshiek CARES 2013-09-24
Summary:
Poweshiek CARES is coordinating an action for the Montezuma and Grinnell Homecoming Parades. Come join the fun—put on a gas mask, don a pig nose, hand out literature or carry a sign! Help raise awareness and build a more sustainable community.
Details for each parade:
- The Montezuma Parade is Thursday, September 26th. Parade is at 6 p.m. Line-up is at 5:30. Car- and van-drivers will meet in front of Herrick Chapel at 4:45 to offer rides to everyone who can join us.
- The Grinnell Parade is Thursday, October 3rd. Parade is at 5:30 p.m. Meet at Drake Library at 5:00 for the line-up.
Participants will be asked either to 1) walk en masse (and in orderly fashion) wearing gas masks or pig noses and carrying signs naming air pollutants created by CAFOS or to 2) walk along the Poweshiek CARES float (without a mask) and hand out educational literature describing the situation in Iowa.
Why are we doing this?
A lot of people in Poweshiek County do not understand the risks that huge animal confinements pose to neighboring citizens. Poweshiek CARES is working hard to educate the public on these risks. By participating in our local parades, we aim to have a fun, light-hearted demonstration. The more people we get to participate, the more effective our educational impact will be.
