Julia Rumley of Anchorage is the first Grinnell College tennis player from Alaska. Her interest was self-driven, seeking a spot without the benefit of being recruited.

Most walk-ons don't make it, but Rumley did. And now the sophomore is a fixture for the NCAA D3 team in Iowa.

"Julia is a fabulous teammate," head coach Andy Hamilton told me. "Loved by all, and a very serious student. Several of her professors have sought me out to indicate how she positively impacts their courses. Her sweetness naturally permeates our team."

She can play a little, too.

Rumley, of East High fame, has an 11-8 career record in singles, including 2-1 this year, and a 16-14 record in doubles, including 3-2 this year.

Her success is a product of brains, not brawn. What else would you expect from a student studying English and biology?
