News Releases 2013-06-16
Summary:
Grinnell, Iowa -- Grinnell area businesses, non-profit organizations and government agencies are invited to apply to host a Grinnell College student apprentice through a new pilot expansion of the popular local Apprenticeship Program.
Formerly focused exclusively on non-profits, the Apprentice Program is now open to a broader range of organizations, including businesses and government agencies, as well as non-profits.
Prospective hosts may attend an information session on Tuesday, June 25, at 11 a.m. in the Caulkins Community Room at Drake Library. The information session will provide an overview of the program and the application process.
Organizations interested in hosting an apprenticeship must submit an application by 5 p.m. Friday, July 12. Selections will be announced in September. Students chosen to participate will be matched with host organizations in November. The new apprentices will begin work in January 2014 and continue in their roles through December 2014.
How the Host Organization Application Works Host organizations will be selected by a review committee made up of Grinnell College faculty and staff and current apprentice students. Preference will be given to organizations committed to providing a meaningful work experience for students and connecting with other community organizations. The review committee may ask to make site visits as part of the review process.
How the Apprenticeship Program Works Grinnell's Apprenticeship Program allows Grinnell College students to work one-on-one with an organization's executive leadership, gaining hands-on experience with day-to-day operations, developing new skills, gaining insight into management, and contributing to community development efforts in Grinnell. The pilot apprenticeship expansion is sponsored by Grinnell College's Innovation Fund, established to support faculty, student and staff pilot projects that promise the most transformative benefits for Grinnell's teaching and learning.
