Works From Iowan Artists Scott Robert Hudson and Margaret Whiting at Faulconer Gallery

Starting on Friday, July 19, "Wild Horses" and "Environmental Concerns," art by Scott Robert Hudson and Margaret Whiting respectively, will be on display in the Faulconer Gallery.

The two exhibitions are distinct, but related. Lesley Wright, director of the Faulconer Gallery, notes, "In Scott Hudson and Margaret Whiting's works, art and law, animal and human, past and present, European and Native American, environment and history, myth and science each play a part, and together can change our perception and understanding."

Scott Robert Hudson's "Wild Horses" is about loss, regeneration, evolution and adaptation. Twenty horse skulls, painted and suspended from the ceiling to simulate a circling herd in a dramatically lit gallery space, were inspired by a back-country encounter with the wild horses in Nevada's Black Rock Desert. In this installation, Hudson evokes three cultural experiences: North Americans' experiences with wild horse herds, the Paleolithic caves of Southern France, and the human drama of the Ghost Dance, a religion that spread quickly in the 1890s as Native Americans responded to government persecution.

"Environmental Concerns" is made up of three works by Margaret Whiting. In "Deforestation," "Annotated Cases," and "U.S. Geological Survey" Whiting carves, alters and recombines science texts, encyclopedias, law books and maps to raise environmental issues with her art. Whiting's works effectively address the ways human laws help and hinder environmental protection, the connections between human health and the health of the land, and the patterns and systems that connect us all.

Faulconer Gallery will host the following public events during the joint exhibition of "Wild Horses" and "Environmental Concerns":

• Thursdays, 12:15 p.m.: Yoga in the gallery with Monica St. Angelo for beginners and experienced practitioners. Co-sponsored by Live Well Grinnell. Mats are provided.
• Wed., July 24 and July 31, 1:30 p.m.: Spend time in the gallery drawing from the exhibitions. Stools, drawing tools, and feedback from Tilly Woodward, outreach curator, available.
• Fri., Aug. 30, 5:15 p.m.: "Welcome Back" reception celebrating all Faulconer Gallery exhibitions.
• Tues., Sept. 3, 4:15 p.m.: A Gallery Talk with the artists, Scott Robert Hudson and Margaret Whiting.

"Wild Horses" and "Environmental Concerns" are open through Sept. 8. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week, and admission is free.
