This afternoon, Feb. 8, at 12:31 p.m., the Student Government Association (SGA) Elections Board released the results of the 2020-2021 SGA elections, both for executives and senators.

Lana Katai ‘21 was elected president of SGA for the next academic year in a decisive margin of victory over Amanda Weber ‘21: 330 votes.

“I am very, very excited to work with the VP’s and student groups, as well as the new President [of Grinnell College] to make the things that students want to happen happen on this campus,”  said Katai.

Amelia Zoernig ‘21 was elected as Vice President of Student Affairs (VPSA) and Fernando Rodriguez ‘22 was elected Vice President of Academic Affairs (VPAA). Rodriguez was elected with only a three-vote difference over Charun Upara ‘21. This is the second time in two years that an SGA position has been determined by a three-vote margin. In both cases, the winner was a second-year when elected over their third-year competitor, the other case being current VPSA Saketan Anand ‘21 in his win over Quinn Ercolani ‘20.

Below is the full list of senators elected to Student Senate for Spring 2020:

Smounker: Xonxy Gaddis and Aris Reyes

OC(N)CO: Errol Blackstone, Amari Brooks and Vacant

Loosehead: Fernando Rodriguez, Declan Jones and C’Erra Houston

Lakeroje: Lily Kirsch, Hazel Murray and Contested

Jamaland: Padraig Haley and Julia Tlapa

Contested senatorial positions are those in which there was a tie. They will be decided after The Elections Board reaches out to these candidates to see how they would like to proceed. Usually, these races are decided by a run-off election in the cluster.

Stay tuned for The S&B’s full coverage of the 2020 elections coming later this week, including profiles of the three newly elected executives.
