ARL Member Session: Special Collections and ADA Title II (Invitation Only)
ARL Policy Notes 2025-03-03
Join ARL’s Advocacy and Public Policy Committee on Wednesday, March 19, at 2:00–3:00 p.m. EDT for an informal virtual discussion of strategic approaches to special collections compliance with updated Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Title II regulations. This forum offers ARL member representatives and senior leaders and subject-matter experts in ARL libraries an opportunity to exchange institutional strategies and opportunities for collaboration to provide accessible materials in alignment with ADA’s regulatory requirements.
Come prepared to listen and share:
- How is your library prioritizing accessibility of items in your special collections in the context of ADA Title II? How does this compare with your library’s prioritizing of accessibility of material in other categories?
- Is your library or institution involving multiple units in its approach to ADA Title II compliance? Which other units are engaged?
- Is your institution considering undue burden or fundamental alteration within your compliance strategy for individual item-level accessibility?
- What formalized processes and documented practices has your library developed for systematically addressing special collections accessibility requirements under ADA Title II?
- What legal resources are you using to inform compliance decisions?
- What specific support mechanisms or resources would be valuable from ARL and peer institutions?
- Which technological solutions and assessment tools are you implementing to facilitate special collections accessibility?
- What other partners, consortia, or stakeholders are you working with or considering working with?
