Are you stumbling around the internet searching for a work at home business idea to make money online? Once upon a time I was. Despite searching high and low, for the most part all I found was empty promises and offers from people looking to take me for a ride. Fortunately I didn’t fall for that funfair. As a result my transition into the online world of work was relatively straight forward.

I sincerely hope that through this post I am able to inpart some of my knowledge on you. I must stress that what I write represents just one work at home business idea to make money online. There are other ways I’m sure. This is just what has worked for me.  

An Introduction to Affiliate Marketing

The world is full of people and companies trying to sell their products. The world is also full of customers who would benefit from buying such products. An affiliate marketer is there to connect these two kinds of people together.

Have you ever visited a product website and found yourself intrigued with its proposal but still not quite sure whether it’s for you? What would be your next step?

You’d probably Google for more information on the product and dig deeper to find out whether it’s worth spending your money on right? Your decision in fact for the most part may be founded on a product review written by an individual who has experience with said product and wanted to share their experiences. If you’re completely new to affiliate marketing then you probably never realised if you consequently click through to buy a product upon reading a self-hosted product review, it is likely they will be picking up some kind of commission from the sale.

As you can see the model is actually not too dissimilar to a salesperson in retail who gets kickbacks from selling certain products. The big difference however comes in your capacity to earn. Rather than a few hundred people walking into your store everyday, with an online business you are potentially opening your shop doors to millions.

Do not misinterpret what I’m saying! I am definitely not saying you’re going to become rich overnight. I’m definitely not saying you’ll be picking up the keys to a new car next week. I can instead promise you that you won’t! There is no such thing as a get rich quick scheme. You will have to work hard. But in doing so, over time your efforts will be duly rewarded. The speed at which you will begin monetizing is for the most part down to your commitment in building your own success story.    

Choosing a Niche

If you can see the potential in affiliate marketing then your brain is probably already working overdrive in considering what products you could easily recommend and sell. Don’t overcomplicate things. There are no shortage of retailers or product manufacturers with affiliate programmes. What’s more, for the most part they are all begging for you to come and sell their products. You can find money in any niche!

Pick something that interests you. Pick something that you would enjoy writing about! Seriously. The key to a successful work at home business idea to make money online is in creating content you can relate to and find reward from.  

Building a Website

If you’ve never done anything of the sort before then the idea can seem a bit scary. Believe me it isn’t. Building a website from scratch nowadays is actually relatively straight forward. Without any programming knowledge or web know how you can be up and running in a few minutes and ready to get to work on your content.

There are ways to incorporate affiliate marketing methods into pre-existing websites or Web 2.0 social media sites such as Blogger, Squidoo and Hubpages but ideally you should be thinking about building your own. The fact of the matter is that in doing so you are ensuring your fate is left completely in your own hands. Don’t put yourself at the mercy of other websites with their ever changing terms and conditions. Become your own boss!  

Writing Content

If you write quality content then this will create a following of people reading your content of which some will concert to customers. It’s as simple as that.

Affiliate marketing is not always about writing to sell. You should be truthful in your recommendations and only associate yourselves with products you truly believe in. A charismatic and enthusiastic writing style will greatly benefit you in becoming an authority on a subject. This again emphasises the importance of finding a niche that interests and motivates you.  

Search Engine Optimisation

We want our content to be laser targeted for our audience and easy to find. Fortunately there are many on page SEO techniques you can implement to help keep the search engines happy along with many techniques off page also. Once this knowledge is ingrained into you then Search Engine Optimisation is not anywhere near as daunting as it may first seem. For the most part it’s important to remember that achieving high search engine rankings can take time and that taking shortcuts or trying to artificially manipulate results can be costly further down the road.  

Making Money

Once you’ve picked a niche you care about, built an easy to navigate website begin writing search engine optimised engaging content you will be surprised at how quickly you begin building an audience. You’ll then further be surprised that these people are not only listening to what you’ve got to say but taking on board your product recommendations and making purchases through your site. It’s amazing how quickly $50/week in commissions can turn to $500/week. Don’t stop there! Keep going. Keep scaling. Go above and beyond.
