Summary:

jothelibrarian:

Pretty medieval manuscript of the day isn’t a manuscript… it’s the ruins of Rievaulx Abbey. Today is the feast day of Aelred of Hexham, abbot of Rievaulx. I’ve been running this blog for a while now, so we’ve already looked at what I believe is the only Creative Commons licensed manuscript image of Aelred, so today you’ll just have to make do with this beautiful photograph of the Cistercian abbey where he rose from novice to abbot.

If you’ve never visited Rievaulx, I urge you to at your earliest opportunity. It is in a beautiful spot in the middle of lovely Yorkshire, not far from Helmsley Castle and York. You can lose hours exploring the ruined abbey and admiring the pretty medieval floor tiles.
