Summary:

"According to creative commons definitions (https://wiki.creativecommons.org/wiki/Creative_Commons_and_Open_Educational_Resources), a 'rights-holder' (the person creating the work) may choose one of the following designations for utilization and distribution of their work:

  • Attribution.  All CC licenses require that others who use the work must give credit in the way the rights-holder requests.  This credit does not endorse the individual using the work.  If the end user desires either to use the work without giving credit or to use the work and receive endorsement, the rights-holder must first give permission.
  • Noncommercial.  In this instance, the rights-holder allows for the copy, distribution, display, performance and modification (unless works designed 'no derivative') of work.  These works cannot be used for commercial purposes without permission.
  • ShareAlike.  In this designation, end users can copy, distribute, display, perform, and modify the right-holder’s work as long as they distribute the work on the same terms.  If the end user wants to distribute the right-holder’s modified work under other terms, they must get permission first.
  • NoDerivatives.  This permission allows for the copy, distribution, display and performance only of original copies of the right-holders work.  Any modification requires permission."
