Why The Independent is Fucking Awful
reddit: the front page of the internet 2017-07-04
If you go on the front page of Reddit at the moment, chances are that you'll see at least one (sometimes more) heavily upvoted link to an Independent article. It will have a sensationalist headline, maybe even "BREAKING" in it if you're lucky, and when you look on the Reddit post's comments you'll have people discussing the title's subject.
When you actually click on the article however, you'll usually see a different title only vaguely related to what the actual title was, followed by about 2 to 3 sentences on the subject, oh and about 30 adverts if you don't use AdBlock.
The reason I'm going on this rant and not really caring if anyone listens is I've finally been pushed to the point where I unfollowed The Independent on Facebook and Twitter, thanks to the joy I experienced when I logged on to Facebook after waking up this morning to be greeted with the headline "Scientists are predicting the end of sex", with the sub-heading "Enjoy it while you can".
Of course the aforementioned article was a load of bollocks, and contained nothing about "the end of sex". Similar to the article I saw on there the other day about a "seatless plane" being introduced, accompanied by the caption "Amazing". The article had tons of likes, comments and shares, but when you actually looked at it, it said that one company from Venezuela was CONSIDERING the idea.
What I'm getting at is that for some reason on Reddit The Independent seems to be treated as this last bastion of great journalism, when in fact other sites such as Buzzfeed, which are usually roundly mocked, actually have much better journalism, although at this point that isn't saying much.
So yeah that's my case on why The Independent is fucking awful. If this gets enough upvotes I look forward to seeing it posted on their website with no credit given in the next few days.
