Study on the impact of open access on academic books in Switzerland

Summary:

The final report of the pilot project OAPEN-CH conducted by the Swiss National Science Foundation has been published.

Under the project OAPEN-CH, the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) examined the impact of open access on the use, sale and costs of academic books in Switzerland between 2014 and 2017 in detail in collaboration with a number of academic publishers. The results of the study are now out. They reveal that open access has only a minor influence on the sales figures for printed books, but a major influence on their usage and scope.

The SNSF used the results of OAPEN-CH to help draft its new open access policy, which came into effect in April. It therefore offers fresh possibilities to fund open access books and chapters.
