Summary:

"...The London Mathematical Society (LMS) is pleased to announce the launch of a new academic journal - Journal of Topology to add to its list of influential titles.

The society issued the first call for papers this week and hopes the new journal will soon be recognised as the leading place to publish in the field of topology. It is also committed to keeping the cost of subscribing to its journals to a minimum, ensuring that they will be accessible to mathematicians wherever they are.

Dr Susan Hezlet, publisher at the LMS, said, ìWe are delighted to have an opportunity to expand our publication portfolio in this important area of mathematics. We are also delighted that the journal will be in the hands of an experienced editorial board comprising some of the world's leading topologists.

The LMS is Britainís pre-eminent society for research mathematics and is responsible for publishing some of the most prestigious journals recognised by mathematicians worldwide.

Dr Hezlet pointed out that the LMS is a not-for-profit publisher and has a policy of pricing its journals affordably to ensure that access to the scholarship is as extensive as possible. ìIt is our wish to make mathematics available to scholars around the world whilst minimising the costs, she said.

Topology is a branch of mathematics relating to the geometry of objects. It is concerned with the form objects take rather than their size, volume or even shape. It has applications in areas such as robotics, cosmology and even microbiology.

Professor Ulrike Tillmann will be the managing editor of the journal. She is an algebraic topologist at the University of Oxford. The university has a strong tradition in the field of topology, dating back to the 1950s when JHC Whitehead and his team laid the foundations for contemporary topology.

Professor Tillmann said, ìI hope that colleagues around the world will support the editorial board by submitting some of their best papers.

Journal of Topology will publish papers of high quality and significance in topology, geometry and neighbouring areas of mathematics. Important and often unexpected links connect topology and geometry with many other parts of mathematics and the editors are looking forward to seeing some exciting new developments in these areas, as well as in the core subject areas of the journal.

The journal will be published quarterly, in conjunction with Oxford University Press, which will manage printing and distribution. It will have an annual subscription price of £300 or $570, with discounts for libraries taking other LMS journals.

The first issue of Journal of Topology will be published in January 2008...."
