Summary:
India is not the only country where news media are being pressured under the pretext of fake news. Malaysia’s newly drafted fake news legislation provides for prison sentences of up to six years. Singapore is considering tough new legislation. But in India, the existing legal statutes — including laws governing defamation, hate speech and official secrets — are more than enough to deal with real offenders.
Yet, we the media, must take a part of the blame for leaving an opening for the politicians. A combination of laziness and partisanship, fueled by the disruptive forces of new technology, has allowed all of us to be attacked as “fake.”
