Connect.Collaborate.Create: COESO project calls for ideas to participate in the final conference

Within the past decade, discussions on the connection between Citizen Science and Open Science have been popping up around Europe. Citizen Science (also called Participatory Research), now an umbrella term for diverse research practices that actively include “non-professional researchers” in the research process, is often inherently transparent, transdisciplinary, and accessible (Vohland & Göbel 2017). Beyond sharing at least these three important values,  Citizen Science and Open Science are contributing to new frameworks for knowledge production (Hecker et al. 2018); the European Commission acknowledges how this can help society gain trust in science (European Commission 2020) and has provided millions of Euros through the Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe programs for research projects that engage citizens and society (check out this Exploring Citizen Science podcast episode for more insight on that). 

So how can Open Science networks and infrastructures better support and connect with the Citizen Science community? The OPERAS coordinated project, COESO, is organising the Connect.Collaborate.Create conference in Paris on October 19–21, 2023,  where the following topics (among many others) will be on the table for discussion: 

  • What is the role of shared Open Science and responsible research and innovation principles and technologies? How can open and ethical approaches to service development and interoperability support citizen science at the national and European levels?
  • What are the challenges and (potential) solutions to enabling collaborative research with and for society, both at the network and infrastructure level? 
  • How can connections and synergies among services and infrastructures be strengthened for the benefit of citizen science and participatory research practices?
  • How do research funding schemes need to be transformed to enable participatory research? How do the processes within funding agencies need to be transformed to allow for participation in their activities (such as strategy development, call definition, and proposal evaluation)?

    • DATA WORKFLOWS AND COMMUNICATION FORMATS
    • DRIVERS AND BARRIERS FOR IMPLEMENTING, SUPPORTING, AND FUNDING CITIZEN SCIENCE, AS WELL AS PARTICIPATION IN THE PROCESSES OF FUNDING AGENCIES
  • How do we assess and evaluate participatory processes? 
    • ASSESSING AND EVALUATING PARTICIPATORY PROCESSES
