Almost since its inception, the pros and cons of an Article Processing Charge-based (APC) business model for Open Access (OA) publishing have been described and discussed by the many stakeholders in the scholarly communications ecosystem. Within the last couple of years, publishers have started to experiment with other models for funding open access, and the roadblocks that exist in funding open access have been scrutinized to some extent as well.
