The paper discusses the importance of FOSS tools in library and information science. Attention will be focused on public libraries. Through the analysis of standard workflows in public libraries, relevant FOSS tools will be presented, which cover specific areas of library's activities. The role of the community development FOSS tools and its relevance for the further development of libraries are also examined.
