"Back in November, the Canadian government made some monumental changes to the way in which academic content is going to be disseminated in the country, stating at the time: “Canada has become a world leader in a number of important scientific research areas, and continues to support leading-edge research by some of the world's best scientific minds. Increasing public access to government-funded scientific research data and information has the potential to further drive innovation and discovery across the broader scientific community.” Last week, on February 27th, the 3 granting agencies announced that they would be mandating a Tri-Agency Open Access Policy, coming into effect on May 1st 2015, the same day that the EPSRC’s open data mandates come into enforcement in the UK. The three federal granting agencies in question are are: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). They have been very clear in their reasons for doing this, with The Honourable Ed Holder, Minister of State (Science and Technology), stating last week ..."
