"Neuroscientist Alexandra Elbakyan from Kazakhstan is the master-mind behind Sci-Hub, which illegally provides over 48 million scientific articles online for free. It’s the Pirate Bay of science ... Sci-Hub went live in 2011 and has been facing problems with the law since then. In 2015, a decision of a New York district court ordered it to be taken down, but its founder only moved to a different domain and continued on providing the files. It is a similar fight faced by Pirate Bay itself and Popcorn Time, which are known pirate websites that provide illegal content online.  Elsevier, one of the world’s leading science publishers, is suing Sci-Hub for 'irreparable harm' – and wants up to US$150,000 for each article provided by the site. Elbakyan, however, says she will not back down. She considers Elsevier’s business model to be illegal in accordance with the article 27 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states that 'everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits' ..."
